Even though he lost in rapid games to Karjakin in the semis, his scored 7 wins and 5 draws in classical chess (no losses!), which may be the 4th highest classical chess TPR (tournament performance rating) ever!
His classical game results:
1 Jumabayev 1
2 Jumabayev 1
3 Ipatov 1
4 Ipatov 1
5 Grischuk 1
6 Grischuk 1
7 Jakovenko ½
8 Jakovenko ½
9 Nakamura 1
10 Nakamura ½
11 Karjakin ½
12 Karjakin ½
I put these numbers into Elo calculator and got TPR of 2954.
According to wikipedia the 3 best TPRs are:
3102, Fabiano Caruana, Sinquefield Cup 2014
3001, Magnus Carlsen, Pearl Spring 2009
2999, Gabriel Sargissian, Zafra 2007
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_records_in_chess#Highest_performance_rating_in_a_tournament)
Another article in chess.com, written in 2012, lists the highest as:
Bobby Fisher 6-0 with 3080 TPR
Gata Kamsky over Etienne Bacrot 3 1/2 out of 4 3047 TPR
and Judit Polgar over 2900 TPR 8.5/9 games
But my guess is that Fischer doesnt qualify as perfect results cant be calculated into TPR.
There have been some other mentioning about some other tournaments such as Karpov in Linares 94 or Kasparovs many tournaments or even Kramnik in Riga over 3000 TPR and Wesley So's 3183 but those havent been all classical tournaments.
In summary, I believe that Eljanov's run is probably atleast in top 10 best results ever.
